The Unburning Forest

The forest consists of trees that look both burned and frozen.
We did run into a pack of wolves that, indeed, seem to powers that affected our spiritual centers.

Crow Cage

We have come across an old an in a crow's cage.
He is missing a leg and have asked if we have one to spare. Neither myself, nor Baern can determine his nature (some of his comments do hint that he is undead, or possibly simply mad)
He does not remember how long he has been in the cage.
He told us the following things:
"To the left is the is the unburning woods. In the woods the trees are not friendly and there are shadow wolves. If the queen wolf curses you, your only hope is to pray to the gods you believe in."
"To the right are the sighing plains. The souls themselves will eat you alive."
"Past me, the road to Dunsmuir"
Voss believes that he is an emissary to the Daughter.
While I believe that the greatest research opportunity is the plain, our goal lies within the forest.

Oefa

We are trying to track down Oefa. She has been seen at the the temple of the Father with a dwarven livestock trader.
Speaking with Olef, we were told that Guile a drow Bruiser has been preventing Olef from leaving the city. Guile is also looking for Oefa and Olef has been known to supply her with large numbers of livestock.
Guile is one of the enforcers of the council (specifically a lady D'targin)
We were able to discover that Oefa was staying at the Princess and Crown inn (the sign a half elf half skeleton image)
We were able to get into her room. Within, we found evidence of research into ritual magic (specifically necromantic divine rituals). We recovered several research books on: necromancy, the nature of souls, magical locations (specifically those aligned to nature)
Oefa is clearly a researcher at heart as she has made extensive notes in the margins. She appears to be trying to fid a naturally aligned location within the zone of shadow.
She made a note that while gods affect the nature of those that worship them, the reverse is also true.
Leaving Oefa's room, we had a run in with group of drow led by Guile and a female drow. They wore rings that are half spider, half humanoid.
We have a likely location of a naturally aligned site within the shadow. While not directly on the path to Dunsmuir, it is deeper. We shall proceed there next.

Fellocial

Montigan and Lady Kim have gone to Dunsmuir (Treacher's Folly)
Fellocial (the Lich Queen) is now being worshipped as a deity in Portsmouth. Clerics of Fellocial do have divine powers. As a result, it is clear that a Thaumological Field has formed. Powers started to occur approximately 50 years ago (coinciding to the return of divine powers in Ascension and the beginning of the spread of the shadow field from Dunsmuir.
Two recent increases in divine powers of Fellocial worshippers have occurred. The first coincides with the Lich Queen's release from Mount Ascension, the second with the confrontation we witnessed between Fellocial and the existing pantheon. This would give evidence that a spontaneous Thaumological field arose (perhaps seeded by unclaimed evil souls). Upon release, Fellocial seized control of the field (the first power jump)
The second power increase may indicate that an intelligently controlled Thaumological field is more powerful when the controlling intelligence resides on another plane.
Other religions are tolerated within Portsmouth except for worship of the Mother (which has been driven underground)
The church or Fellocial, is currently divided on the true nature of undead.
- one group, sees undead as an ideal state of being. The type of undead you return as being determined by your life.
- the second, see undead as part of the circle of life, simply another step in a circle of rebirth
- the final, undead are an ultimate state of being. Everyone should be undead. This is a militant sect.
There is some missionary work for Fellocial going on.

Portsmouth

Portsmouth lies on the edge of a huge area of darkness. Within the darkness, undead occur and rise without the intervention of Necromancers.

Within Portsmouth, the residents have all been transformed by the shadow energies. This has rendered them able to see in the dark. In the case of elves and humans, it has darkened their skin while bleaching their hair white. The effect on dwarves was reversed (pale skin and black hair). Weak undead serve as laborers and porters. There are no changed creatures but these all seem to be merchants and other travelers.

While much food comes from outside Portsmouth (from fishing and trade with the coastal cities), some strangely changed crops do seem to grow within the shadow.

The Bareran diplomatic core that left Ferbin arrived at Portsmouth a while ago. They have travelled further into the shadow to attempt to establish an embassy.

Keran Duskblade (the Lich Queen’s general from the undead wars) rules in her name. We have seen the Lich Queen in the presence of the other ascended beings of this world’s pantheon. Given her power, it is possible that she has also ascended. She has certainly gained power quickly since she was released (along with Duskblade) from Mount Ascension.

The darkness  began to spread from Dunsmuir (Treacher’s Folly) around 50 years ago (the same time as magic began to return). Treacher has become a saint like figure to the undead.

Oefa (Baern’s fiancé) is leading a rebellion in the shadowed lands.

We will need to travel further into the shadow.

A small fey detour

We have decided that on our way to Portsmouth, we will make a stop in one of the feral regions dominated by the fey creatures. These creatures are currently aligned with Ascension against Berera. Given what we have encountered, there are clearly demonic forces working on the Ascension side. They summoned a large corrupting force in an attempt to usurp a huge nature spirit.

On the way, we were forced to fight a mated pair of displacer beasts who were chasing a goblin we previously encountered, Running Fox. Additionally, we encountered a large group of Apes we were forced to deal with.

Upon reaching the fey court, we talked to Greybeard and the fey council. It was split on three lines; those who wished to stay allied to Ascension, those who wanted to turn all of their efforts against the undead, and those who wished to remain neutral for the time being.

We managed to convince the council to remain neutral (at least until we gathered more info from the undead regions).

Infornations and Musings

Tercera are often referred to as the third or the third pillar of divinity in the ancient language. Tecera serve as the bridge between the being and the land. They allow someone to more fully act upon an area

Would it be possible to create a vessel that could capture the souls of the dead not otherwise claimed by a god? This would alleviate the issues (such as natural undead) caused by the collection of these souls. This vessel would contain immense amounts of power.

This does raise an interesting question, however. Up chain, it appears that the gods were effectively “harvested” of their power to be used to uplift the gods of Haven (and Peter Kovak in the case of Furlough). It is highly unlikely that all (or even most) of the beings in the previous words were able to flee Kansul. Given the influencing power of souls (as witnessed in the effect on the various fragments of Peter Kovak) it is unlikely that the forces of Kansul are absorbing the souls of the good within the consumed worlds. With no gods to collect their souls either, are these souls coalescing into beings of their own or potentially manifesting in natural phenomenon? Might there be proto-gods that have formed in these worlds?

The demons were attempting to co-opt the goblin gods (through beings such as the Lord of teeth)

The Bareran’s credit Eladrius for stopping them from going completely feral as the demonic energies turned them into Tieflings. While he was supposedly not around, he setup a system to allow them to maintain themselves during the troubles. This did not work for the halflings. Halfling affected by the energies have gone completely feral.

Barera is the site of entry into Haven. It is also the focus of the circle designed to keep the forces of Kansul from coming through. Thus the arcane banging is, in fact, Kansul’s forces attempting to bring down this barrier. The Barerans seem aware of this. They have been strengthening their defenses towards the interior of the city, effectively turning their defenses inside out.

The devils are willing to remove Haven from the chain. The result would, presumably, result in Furlough becoming directly connected to Kansul controlled worlds. Would it, instead, be possible to close the loop on the Kansul worlds?  This would cut them off from the Haven, Furlough, and whatever worlds lie further down chain. Though this does raise the question of whether the chain is a loop or a line. If a loop, then there is an additional front potentially waiting to open.

The Possibility is a Tercera aligned to the chaotic powers of the Far Realm. It would be possible to realign it to the civilizing side of the Mother by:

  1. Having the best stone mason in carve the stone into a building block
  2. Performing 7 baptisms upon the stone
  3. Have the stone in the presence of one birth and at the death of an wise elder.
  4. Using the stone as  a cornerstone in a Mother aligned building
Gnomes are the interaction of fey energies with halflings.
